Sustainable Consumption: How do we Encourage Consumers to Purchase Sustainably?
This report is based on a primary research study of consumer purchasing behaviour undertaken for the Canadian Centre for Pollution Prevention (C2P2). This study was funded by the Office of Consumer Affairs of Industry
Executive Summary (en Français)
Best Management Practices - Halifax Harbour
Partnering with all three levels of government as well as local partners, C2P2 is developing best management practices (BMPs) for 10 industrial, commercial and institutional sectors that discharge to Halifax Harbour as a method to reduce and possibly eliminate harmful pollutants at source.
Citizens Guide to Pollution Prevention
The Citizens' Guide to Pollution Prevention, published in English and French in 1998, is an excellent source of information on pollution prevention at home, at work and on the road. C2P2 assisted the Canadian Institute for Environmental Law and Policy in updating the Guide based on recent advancements in pollution prevention.
CCME Assessment of the Feasibility of a Change-out/Education Program for Residential Wood Combustion
On behalf of the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment's (CCME) Intergovernmental Working Group on Residential Wood Combustion, C2P2 conducted an Assessment of the feasibility of a change-out/education program for residential wood combustion. The project evaluated whether change-out programs or education programs workshops alone or in combination would be more effective in achieving reductions in PM emissions from the residential wood sector. Building on this initial evaluation, C2P2 assessed the feasibility of a national wood stove change-out/education campaign.
Greenhouse Gas Reductions (GHG) - Healthcare sector
Working on behalf of Bluezone Technologies, C2P2 is assisting create awareness of the impact of anaethestic gas on GHG. Information materials such as success stories, case studies, posters and articles will be supplied to help support that effort.
ISO 14000 Guidance Document for Smaller Businesses
With guidance from the businesses of the Emery Creek Environmental Association in Toronto, the C2P2 produced an ISO 14000 Guidance Document for Smaller Businesses. Focus group sessions and workshops with the businesses resulted in a valuable document designed to ensure environmental compliance, stimulate a move to prevention and align business efforts with ISO 14000.
Model Pollution Prevention Plans for Wastewater Systems for the Reduction of Inorganic Chloramines and Chlorinated Wastewater Effluents in Wastewater Effluents
In collaboration with Marbek, C2P2 developed four sample P2 plans that will provide guidance to persons subject to the December 4, 2004 Gazette Notice requiring the development of such plans. EC has proposed pollution prevention (P2) planning requirements for: those persons who own a wastewater system at the time of publication of the P2 Planning Notice where the effluent released during either 2004 or 2005 from that system to surface waster is greater than or equal to 5,000 m3 per day, based on an annual average, and where the concentration of total residual chlorine in the effluent released to surface water exceeds 0.02 mg/L in any sample during either 2004 or 2005, based on representative sampling.
Municipal Management Tool for Integrated Plant Health Care and Pesticide Reduction
Under the direction of a small municipal steering group coordinated by Environment Canada - Ontario Region, C2P2 has been tasked with developing a 'How to' guide for municipalities. The Guide will raise issues confronting municipalities as they embark on pesticide reduction initiatives. The Guide will include tools and techniques for assessing a municipalities state of readiness for pesticide reduction as well as implementation strategies.
Natural Resources Canada ENERGY STARî Procurement Guide Booklet
C2P2 developed a Procurement Guide Booklet, a reference guide that will promote the use of ENERGY STAR procurement tools to procurement officials which include decision makers, influencers, buyers and designers, in all levels of governments, institutions and the public sector. The Guide was vetted through a peer group of procurement officials before being recently released.
P2 Technical Guidance Manual for Municipal Wastewater Effluent
Refined the guidance manual for Environment Canada on Municipal Wastewater Effluents. Environment Canada is considering issuing a P2 plan Notice under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA 1999) with respect to Municipal Wastewater Effluents (MWWE) as a first step in a control program. A guidance manual is needed to help direct the efforts of communities to address the Notice. The guidance manual explains what a P2 plan is, what is expected in response to a CEPA P2 plan Notice, and P2 activities for consideration in developing a P2 plan.
Practical Guide to Pollution Prevention
The C2P2 produced a guide of problem-solving and decision-making tools to help organizations include pollution prevention in everyday business. The guide was prepared by practitioners (Pollution Prevention Planning (P3) WorkGroup) for practitioners - those who design, implement and maintain pollution prevention programs.
Progress in Pollution Prevention
For the fifth consecutive year, the C2P2 wrote and produced the Government of Canada annual report, Progress in Pollution Prevention. This report showcases the federal governments achievements in incorporating pollution prevention into its own activities and those of its partners.
Sewer Use Best Management Practices
In collaboration with Marbek and XCG Consultants, C2P2 is researching and developing best management practices (BMPs) for 6 industrial, commercial and institutional sectors that discharge wastewater containing harmful pollutants such as COA Tier I and Tier II substances, Binational Toxic Strategy Level 1 and Level 2 substances as well as various precious metals. The BMPs which will include P2 and treatment information will be used by municipalities to assist IC&I facilities in their respective jurisdictions as guiding documents.
Textile Mill Effluent P2 Guidance Manual
C2P2 in association with Fintex Mechanical & Process Inc. developed a Guidance Manual to assist textile mills in preparing and implementing a pollution prevention plan as per the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 (CEPA 1999) Section 56 Notice. The intent of the manual is to assist wet processing textile mills with an easy to use comprehensive and accessible Guidance Manual and Increase general awareness of P2 planning at the mills targeted by the Notice.
The Impact of Bylaws and Public Education Programs on Reducing the Cosmetic / Non-Essential, Residential Use of Pesticides: A Best Practices Review
In partnership with Cullbridge Marketing and Communication, C2P2 completed a study assessing the effectiveness of approaches used across North America and Europe to decrease the cosmetic use of pesticides on residential properties through education and bylaws/legislation. The effectiveness of each approach was evaluated on a variety of factors such as program costs, the proportion and number of citizens reached and the proportion and amount of residential pesticides reduced to name but a few.
